Reykjavík to Klaustur via the North Mountain Road (F208, Nyrðri Fjallabaksleið) and back to Reykjavik on the main road. Open June 15 to September 30.
Departure from west to east from Reykjavik not later than 9am heading east along road 1 via the village of Hveragerði (coffee stop available), the small town of Selfoss and head on east to the Thjórsárdalur valley and the interior.
We have a coffee stop and stretch at Hrauneyjar and then continue into the remote mountain road to Landmannalaugar with a stop at Sigöldugljúfur, The Valley of Tears, as some people call it. We stop at Landmannalaugar for lunch, hikes, photos, a bath in the warm springs, or whatever you feel like doing.
From there we continue on east on top of the mountains or at the bottom of gorges, crossing small rivers and creeks on the way to Eldgjá, one of the largest canyons in Iceland, 60 km. long and up to 600 meters wide and 200 meters deep. The canyon was formed in a gigantic eruption in 934 AD that lasted for several years resulting in the largest lava flow known in historic times that covers more than 800 square kilometers.
From Eldgjá we continue east and then south along the river Skaftá to the Klaustur area for an early dinner before heading back east to west to Reykjavík via road 1. This trip can also be done in reverse, heading straight to the Klaustur area for lunch and then continuing on the North Mountain Road back to Reykjavik.
