Departure from hotel no later than 9am. heading east and then turning south on to road F88 and the desolate interior of the north highlands. We cross the river Lindá and then stop at the beautiful oasis of Herðubreiðarlindir where a whole river of ice-cold and crystal-clear spring water emerges straight out of the ground.
From there we head further south across vast fields of light-coloured pumice from the Askja eruption in 1875 and to the Ranger station in Drekagil (Canyon of Dragons), where we stop and walk into the canyon to visit the dragons. Then we carry on to the caldera on road F894 and stop at an entrance to the caldera. From there it is a 45 minute walk to Lake Askja, Iceland´s deepest lake that was formed when the caldera collapsed into itself after the eruption in 1875. Next to Lake Askja is a small crater, Víti (Hell), with warm water at the bottom. The whole caldera is surrounded by a high mountain range making the area one of the most stunningly beautiful in Iceland. From there we return along the same road back to the hotel for the night.
