CCE 4 – Day Tour Leg – North South via the Interior – Up North Option C – Langanes peninsula

Langanes peninsula. Daytrip to the end of the remote peninsula Langanes via the remote and almost abandoned Melrakkaslétta which used to be populated with farms and fishing villages.

Departure from hotel no later than 9am. heading east with a stop in Ásbyrgi, a large horseshoe shaped canyon with a beautiful forest and a small lake all the way in the back end. From Ásbyrgi we head further east crossing Jökulsá á Fjöllum, one of Iceland´s largest rivers in terms of volume. We stop at the fishing village of Kópasker for coffee and stretch and then continue north around Melrakkasletta, a remote large and very flat part of Iceland that is laden with lakes and small creeks stopping at some abandoned farms on the way. Next we stop at the fishing village of Raufarhöfn, which during the heyday of the herring period was Iceland´s largest export harbour and continue on to Thórshöfn, another fishing town that has managed to stay robust. From Thorshöfn we head out on to the Langanes peninsula, a remote and peaceful area that is know for bird life and beautiful views all the way to the end and stop at Icelands most remote lighthouse. On our way back we stop at the ruins of Skálar, a small fishing village that was abandoned rapidly once motorized boats started to become common and from there on to the top of Heiðarfjall, a site of a former U.S. radar station during the Cold War, for a magnificent view of the whole area. From there on we continue back to the hotel for the night with rest and stretch stops on the way.
